תודות ורשמים מהכנס הבינלאומי של האיגוד הבינלאומי לפסיכולוגיה הפסיכואנליטית של העצמי - אוקטובר 2014, ירושלים

Dear IAPSP Executive Board and Council Members

As you all know, the EB's decision last August to go ahead with the conference in Jerusalem as planned, despite the uncertain political situation, involved a serious financial risk. The EB's view was that periodic conferences outside North America were necessary to ensure that IAPSP was truly International. The Council voted to support such an effort, even if it meant a loss of as much as $40,000
I am glad to inform you that the initial income and expense report of the 2014 International conference in Jerusalem shows a loss of approximately $13,175. Which is substantially lower than the loss that had been anticipated. Further, this "loss" does not reflect the $12,500 in donations that were given to the organization in support of the conference. When those are factored in, the total (still approximate) loss was only $675

Even though I was personally and deeply involved in planning this conference and making it happen, I feel it would not be inaccurate to say that it has been a successful and memorable one, and that the risk was worth taking

Warm regards
Eldad Iddan
2014 IAPSP conference chair

Dear Eldad and Al

Congratulations and Mazeltov on such an excellent result. Indeed it was a deeply moving and successful conference on so many levels. That I do not have to sell my house to pay for it is just a wonderful bonus.
Warm regards
Tessa Philips

Dear Eldad and all who worked so hard to make Jerusalem happen....

I am sorry I missed it but I heard it was an amazingly heartwarming and challenging experience for many.  I think all those involved in various ways and all the thinking that went into the various decisions, though hard in so many ways, have proved to be decidedly worthwhile.

Thanks to all, and like Tessa I am glad no-one is going to have to sell their houses to pay for it... well done!

Warmly,
Amanda

I want to add my appreciation to Eldad and all the planners of the conference in Israel. It was a gem in every way and the Israeli self psychologists in particular did themselves proud. As it turned out, it wasn't necessary to put the house in my wife's name.

To my fellow IAPSP members,

In regard to the success of the Jerusalem conference, I'm hardly a neutral party.

That said, I was thrilled with the conference and especially pleased that many, many people spoke to me of the general atmosphere--how warm, welcoming and egalitarian it was, and how accessible all of the participants were.

The theme of the conference (Where do we feel at home? [ie., "Belonging"]) had been carefully chosen (thank you, Amanda) and was meaningfully woven through all of the sessions which contributed to the sense of coherence that prevailed.  Eldad and the planning committee (Neslihan Ruganci, Amanda Kottler, Martin Gossman, Andrea Harms), worked hard to make this happen but the results suggest that we should try to build more conferences around meaningful themes.

Special thanks to everyone who came to Jerusalem, who brought their enthusiasm for self psychology and intersubjectivity, for each of you contributed to the lively, engaging process in each of the plenaries and in every one of the sessions.

It was truly memorable.

Warmly,
Shelley

What wonderful news. Hopefully this experience will reassure us that an international conference, even under difficult conditions, is worth it. I loved this year’s meeting in Jerusalem. The city and country were beautiful. The hospitality of our Israeli colleagues was heart warming. The conference well organized and relevant. Thank you Eldad and the organizing committee. My best, George Hagman

Great news!
Thank you Eldad and thank you to all of the conference planners. From the program, to the lovely terrace, to the great weather you created a lovely ambiance for our very productive meeting. I want to add that our Israeli self psychology comrades were welcoming enthusiastic and terrific hosts. Bravo to all
Jackie

For sure, that's great news that we're solvent!
This was truly a memorable-forever conference. Thank you Eldad and the planning committee for everything--including inspiring us all to "row together" to meet the challenge of making this conference happen. In so many ways the whole experience felt like "the people's conference":)

I'm also completely in accord with building more conferences on relevant themes. I know that being in Israel provided an opportunity I wouldn't have otherwise had, to spend a week in Palestine. Although many times I felt I would burst at the seams with complexity, it was so helpful to be able to return "home" to our group. Choosing relevant themes can certainly bring up this kind of emotional experience. However, as this conference proved, being able  to dialogue so deeply with each other, created a special intimacy and lots of space for creative thinking.  How about holding a conference at some point in Bosnia?
Best to all,
Jane

Yes, Eldad, I want to add my voice in celebrating the success of this conference, held in more difficult than average circumstances, and brought off so gracefully.  Thank you to the organizers, and to all the Israeli colleagues who welcomed us so warmly.  It has been a special pleasure to report to my new friends Rizek and Alice Abusharr, who live with us here in Claremont, CA and managed the Jerusalem YMCA for nearly 40 years, how much we enjoyed their beloved home.

Next year in Los Angeles

I want to add my thanks to Eldad and the organizing committee for a remarkable conference on every level.  Well done!

I especially want to echo Jackie's sentiments about our Israeli colleagues.  I was deeply moved by your gracious reception and willingness to share so many aspects of your home and experience with those of us from other places.  It was not the "easiest" of times for us to visit your home, let alone to struggle with issues of home and belonging.  As a result of your openness, hospitality, honesty, and vulnerability, I have a much better appreciation of the complexity of issues like home and belonging, as well as a deeper understanding of the complexity of the middle east in general.  Such an understanding could not have occurred if your community had been unwilling to welcome us so completely and vulnerably.  I now have faces, names, and places in my mind and heart as I listen to the news. To say that you have broadened my horizons is an understatement. This, to my mind, is the profound value of an international conference, and is well worth the additional expense to the organization and individuals. I am deeply grateful to you all.

Sincerely,
Margy Sperry
